Hi,

could one of you fine chaps remind me of the Pythagoras rule of thumb?

(I seem to remember something about 3, 2, 1??)

1' = Length of X
2' = Length of Y
3' = Hippopot 'o' moose!

Am I way off the mark???

Laying a patio from tomorrow and I wish to create a datum for the centre of the area ensuring it is square to the house.

Should have gone to school more! :oops:

3:4:5 rule,

3", 4", 5" or 300mm, 400mm, 500mm or 3 metre, 4 metre, 5 metre and so on.

All three point must meet together (external side) which will always give you a 90 degree square.

The proper way to achieve what you are looking for is to

multiply length X by itself

multiply length Y by itself

add them together

then square root the result

this will give you the diagonal Y.

for example X is 2.35m multiply by itself = 5.5225m

Y is 3.75m multiply by itself = 14.0625m

add these two together = 19.585

then find the square root = 4.4254943m and then round this number up or down.

Hope this makes sense and helps. ;)

Cheers Masona - you the man!

Cheers Mr Brick, but I'll stick to 3,4,5... I have a fighting chance of winning with that one!

Thanks anyway! :D

It also works with 5:12:13, in case you have any difficult to reach places!

Stop it, just stop it, enough allready!

Look, I can cope with 3,4,5,

Anything else will just confuse my brain!

Nice handle BTW :eek:

Eh? Pythagorus is kids play...are you lot stupid....?
