Question about some very large Victorian skirting.

Hello!

Half of my hall has original skirting, the other half an awful bodge job. I want to match the original but can't seem to find anything like it.

You can see from the photo below, the original stuff is about 30cm in height and about 5cm in depth (I am not in the UK currently and can't measure). I'm not even certain that it is wood. It seems to be made up of several composite layers. The house dates from about 1880.

Can anyone please advise me of a course of action?

Skirtings like that were very often built-up from several profiles stacked one on top of the other, not a single one-poece moulding. Try breaking down the profile into simpler mouldings, e.g. cavetto, ogee, cove, thumbnail, etc and then seeing if you can build a profile up that way. This may require a profile gauge and a bit of patience

You can find out by drilling small, but deep, holes at random locations and listening for any hissing sounds
