I have an old central heating system where there is a water tank in the loft. That presumably feeds the whole system. However, every year after summer, I have to go up into the loft to refill the tank because it has become empty. I push the valve and water slowly trickles out until it stops by itself.

My question is where does the water go and why does it disappear? Does it evaporate over the summer?

What about during the winter, does water slowly decrease? Or is it filling itself up and only when the tank goes completely empty that the valve gets stuck and has to be manually filled?

cheers

You do get some water loss due to evaporation. It sounds as though you need to replace the float valve as it should be topping up the water loss as it drops below a certain level. You should not have to manually fill it that is the whole idea behind the float valve. There should be approx 4 inches of water in the tank.

Why does it only go empty in the summer?

and where does the hot water go after it leaves the water tank? it surely doesnt come back into the tank while its boiling hot?

Sounds like you have got a primatic cylinder which means the tank in the loft is for your hot water aswell. I still think it is a faulty valve though you can also forget the statement about the 4 inch water level. If your tank is running dry i'm surprised you haven't noticed a difference in your hot water pressure.
