Hi. I bought a acer x3200 last night (impulse purchase  ) set it up this morning and the noise/hum was worse than my old. 8yr thing. Due respect curry's took it back and refund no questions asked  , But they couldn't say what would be a quiet p/c.
Sooo does anyone have a p/c they consider quiet they would reccomend in £300 -500 bracket.

with ability to render dvd video editing mainly. I dont normally download films, surfing, and on places like this :p
Cheers have a nice afternoon..

Unfortunately with higher end stuff which is required things like video editing comes a lot of work for a computer hence a lot of heat is generated.
Cooling using fans etc is required to maintain the computer at a reasonable temperature so heat doesn't cause errors and fry the components.
There are other types of cooled system you can investigate - some now use water but I haven't come across them yet so can't comment on noise.
PCs such as laptops and the small desktop PCs as made by compaq / IBM which you tend to see in offices where the fans cut in on demand, but I am not sure if these will be up to video editing.

Thanks .
I should have said 'some' editing i.e. only holiday stuff.
Hmm bit dissapointing as always regarded my old atholon as a bit over noisey seems I've been wronging it all these yrs. :)

Should also of said not looking for whisper quiet.

thanks anyhows ..

I do not know of a particular make of P.C. but I had the same problem with new computer being noisy, even to the point of being picked up by the microphone when doing video editing. Spoke to my supplier who fitted a different type of power supply which was much quieter. I would guess you need to purchase from someone who knows about computers rather than somewhere like Currys.

I would say to get a quiet PC, you would need to custom build with oversized fans etc running slowly,
although saying that my HP compaq machine at work is very quiet.

Actually the p/c i bought seemed quiet in store, but of course in my quiet study at home the humming was unbelievable, really couldnt live with that. I know I wont get whisper quiet for my price range but searching around seems the intel are the quietest. ?? any thoughts?

intels and amds both use their own methods of fan control and both are decent, depending on the system.
With all of my builds i tend to only upgrade the fans if i overclock the sytem. The intel stock fans are pretty quiet tbh.
Quality of case makes a big difference.
You may have just got a rig with something loose inside it, as they're not usually too loud.

As mentioned the only true way is to build the rig yourself and put exactly what you want to put in there.
But i'm thinking that you aren't about to build your own? :)

Thanks all.

I was thinking same but was a bit windy of opening new case up.. and when tech guys on fone said take it back hmmm .

LOl not really, I draw the line at upgrade memory, usb ports etc and bravely relaced h/d. dvd rom replaced for a re-writer. now thats decided to read and display what I copied a few weeks ago but windows dont recognise same disc for rewriting  another reason for replacing p/c

thanks for input...

Tha small case size meant that there wouldve been tiddly fans inside. A 'normal' sized case would have better airflow/larger fans, and not been so noisy.

Try visiting a local pc specialist and ask them to spec you a quiet system.

its usually the casing as if you go for a lil more expensive casing with its own psu
however the other option is watercool system thats expensive
or just buy a laptop

I was sat in the local maternity unit yesterday as my missus had a scan thingy to check the little monkey was moving ok (which he was btw) the pc in there running the scanner doodar was absolutely silent, I only noticed because I'd read this thread beforehand and we were in a room all on our own, twas an HP but the case was huge!

I don't know if it is the same now but Dell PC's are often quiet as they tend to use large fans and air ducts rather than bolted on processor fans.

Also, a Mac Mini is very quiet during normal operation, just depends if you want to "Go Mac". Of course the latest Mini's also can run XP / Vista as well.

i was going to say dell or mac mini. custom build is the way to go mate, you can make it the way you want it.

UPDATE.
Thanks all, interesting reading there. I have actually gone and bought a dell studio 540. it's quiet, not whisper by any means, but better than my old vulcan
Trouble is my fridge is slightly louder now and seems to be in unison with something on the new p/c,, but hey a blokes got to keep his beer cool somewhere ;)

Cheers
