I’ve been busy digging the foundation trenches for my 2.5x3m workshops which is being extended off the back of my detached garage. As this is my first time digging a trench I thought it would be worth getting some opinions from the forum.

Feedback is appreciated.

Very clean and tidy, almost too good to be filled with concrete.

It doesnt look like youve been busy enough......1 trench is missing :ROFLMAO:

Yeah one side still to do. Its going to be a bit more tricky as I’ll need to work around an existing wall foundation and trim that back. With the amount go brick work I’ve had to dig out though, a solid block should be child’s play! Back to the power tools for that.

Trench porn. Might be wrong, but I can’t see much difference in the material at the base of the trench and the trench walls..... what I’m getting at is have you gone deep enough? Sure local geology plays a part, but when I dug mine I went through soil and then hit a very different stoney sand layer. That’s what my BCO wanted to see.

I’ve gone thought all sorts of materials from the grass layer. There doesn’t seem to be much different in the class that I’ve been going through today.

the bco probably knew exactly what the soil in your area is like and knew that the stoney layer is the only one that can hold the load.
In our area it's just clay all the way down so you just have to go really deep. Any big buildings like offices or whatever, they seem to just use a massive machine to drill piles and then fill them with reinforced concrete and put another layer on top, as i assume clay is not so good for these heavy weights

What surprises me is that the existing foundation only seen to me about 200-250mm deep. I guess regs have changed since the 60's?

Building regs normally like to see you dig 4 inch under existing foundations, place a board to step the foundation and then make sure the concrete fills under the old the founds by that 4 inch.
