In my property I have a split load board with earth protection on both sides, one of the circuits is a 3 core swa to the garage about 5 metres away from the house in the garage there is a small garage consumer unit 2 way X1 6amp the other 16amp for a radial circuit, the consumer unit has a main RCBO switch, the question is does the earth protection need to be there as there is earth protection at the house consumer unit? Is it just convenience ?

Providing the the steel armour is connected at both ends of the cable to each CU and the CPC (earth core of the cable) is also terminated at each end and the path to earth is proved, then normally to would be enough.

There would be a case for earth bonding in the garage, if you had exposed conductive parts in that location.

No there is no need for a second RCD of the same rating.

There are two exceptions to the rule one is boats the other is caravans where a 30ma RCD is fitted both at the huck up point and in caravan or boat.

In the old days of voltage operated earth leakage devices there was a problem about where and how the earth rod to fitted. But the new device simply measures the difference between power out and power returned and it does not matter where it is. It is literary the same difference.

When you say say RCBO you mean RCD. (RCD are normally the double width ones)

Why do you ask ?

There is a small advantage to having it there. If a fault occours in the garage and your in the house at the time, you will be able to reset the house straight away.

When you go out to the garage next you will see the RCD has tripped out there indicating a fault has occurred in the garage.

Regarding the armoured cable between the CU in the house and the shed the steel armour and earth have been bonded both ends there is also a Earth stake attached at the garage, the house earth is PME

Marky - there are lots of discrepancies in both your posts.

What, exactly do you want to know?

If you have earth protection at your main CU covering all circuits do you need another device in your garage CU ? That's it

You do not need two RCDs on the same circuit but it will do no harm - it may be inconvenient.

RCDs protect against 'earth leakage' - primarily purpose, through a person.
ALL circuits have protection by being 'earthed'.
