Good afternoon all,
Does a 30 mill amp rcd 2g socket on a sockets ring main give rcd protection to just that particular 2g socket, or to all the sockets on the ring, like a rcbo would?
Thanks.

The RCD will only protect the appliance that is plugged in to it.
So if you are installing new cable, you need to protect that by means of either a RCD protected fuse connection unit where the new cable starts if adding to an existing circuit or RCD protection at the board.

or you could install the cable in a way that it doesn't need to be RCD protected

as plugwash says. but the socket outlet would have to be labelled as such for a particular piece of equipment and is not going to be used for portable equipment

Good morning all,
I thought ALL sockets had to be rcd protected in the 17th edition?
What are the exceptions to this?.....maybe a radial to a socket outlet that could supply only one appliance and nothing else,... a washing machine, with the socket under a worktop, and the cable in trunking.
Thanks.

Its only when you add to the circuit and then only the sockets you add.
There is an exception for specific appliance dedicated to a circuit but that circuit will still require RCD protection if the cable is buried less than 50mm below the surface and not protected by earthed steel conduit or other mechanical protection.
