The 1970's house we're about to buy has an antiquated hot air central heating system which we plan to replace. The current boiler is located within a flue running up the centre of the house whereas the new boiler will be located in the kitchen. This would leave us with a large redundant central flue. We'd like to install a multi-fuel stove using the redundant flue. However experts on other threads have warned about the possible risk of asbestos in chimneys associated with such older heating systems.

I'd really appreciate your advice. Can I leave the flue 'as-is' and simply have a suitable new liner installed - meaning that if there is any asbestos it's not disturbed?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Depends on lots of factors - ask the people who quote to fit the appliance to check the flue, they will tell you if it can be used.

it is very likely a flue built for a gas appliance, and not suitable for a multifuel.

If it looks like a proper big chimney, you might be in luck

but as IJWS15 says, the suppliers will (should) be able to look at it and tell you. It will need testing even if it looks OK.
