Reclaiming bricks

10 year old extension is being enlarged so I have a lot of bricks potentially to re-use.

Fortunately the last builder put the bricks in upside down and they are coming our very clean. They were also laid mid-summer which I believe helps too.

Do I need to clean off the very fine residue or mortar on the sticking surface of the bricks?

If I have to, should I use patio cleaner?

If the layer is stuck on fast - leave it, if it can be brushed off, the faces will need cleaning with a hose.
