Help!

I would be grateful for some information prior to ringing building control tomorrow. A builder is currently working in my house fitting a new kitchen. Part of this work includes part removal of a chimney breast in the kitchen. The chimney breast still exists in the bedroom above. The doorway to the left of the photos goes through to a single story room (would have been the original bathroom of the house)

Having removed the portion of the chimney breast from the kitchen (see attached photos) I am being told that there is no requirement for an RSJ. Does that seem logical?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you will need some sort of support for the remaining stack that is left, either rsj or gallow bracket or take the lot down

You should also get in an acro or two to support the masonry till the beam can be put in..

I’m no SE but if the chimney rises vertically from the ceiling you will certainly need some sort of support (you will probably need something it if it continues to rise at an angle).

Some councils don't allow gallows brackets, mine doesn't and rather than have the room compromised by a boxed in RSJ I took the chimney breast out to the loft and put the rsj in there. Also made the bedroom upstairs bigger!

Sorry i missed the question in the original post.. was distracted by the photos..
So who has told you the chimney doesnt need supporting?

The remainder of the chimney should be supported by something, else you are relying on the bond between the breast and the wall.. which will now be ecentrically loaded..
Best prefered option is a beam under..
