Removing Chimney

Hi All,

I have moved into new house.
And before i do decoration i want to remove the existing unwanted Chimney Breast.

I am planning to DIY this project with help of freinds.
I understand that i need to install Gallow Brackets + combination with a pre stressed concrete lintel.

Can someone help me deciding what size of gallow brackets or lintel i should be using?

Once i completed the work i need to get building control officer to sign of work.

DO i need special calculation to get this work signed off.

I've never quite understood why people do 80% of the work removing a chimney breast right the way up into the loft, and then leave a few tons of bricks hanging around. Why not carry on all the way up through the roof and tile the darn thing over?
