Hi folks,

I’m renovating an old fireplace in an upstairs bedroom and just removed a hideous hearth so I can clean up the original slate underneath.

The hearth was held in place by a lump of concrete as you’ll see in the pics attached.

I’m conscious of potentially causing damage
to the ceiling in the sitting room below the hearth if I take a lump hammer to this. I would be grateful for any ideas on how to tackle.

Many thanks.

I’d try to chisel it out by hammering into the seam between the slate and concrete.
Try first with a wide paint scraper type tool.

possibly drill using a masonry drill top to close to the bottom and drill a line of holes but don’t drill to far.

Ok. Like these ideas. Thanks v much. First time working around concrete so I’m grateful for the tips.
