I'm erecting a DIY conservatory which has vertical steel plates which anchor the conservatory to the wall of the house. The documentation recommends removing the pebble dash from the house wall so that the steel plates sit flush with the wall.

What's the best way to remove the pebble dash? I only want to remove it in strips where the plates will meet the wall (typically 8 ft x 4 in strips).

Or would it be better to just fix the plates to the pebble dashed wall and fill behind them with some type of sealant.

Any ideas?

Measure the size of the conservatory and mark in black felt pen the plate that is to go vertical, then use a 41/2" grinder with a masonary disc (wear glasses etc) and cut the lines out then chisel the render off back to the brick.

To fix the steel strip to a pebble dashed surface would, I think, bring about a number of problems. They would distort when tightening the fixing screws and there might be problems with aligning other components of your conservatory. It is quite easy to remove the pebble dashing and, you could use one of the steel sections as a marker, ie, hold it up to the wall and score down each side with a chisel or thick marker pen. Using a sharp cold chisel and weighty hammer, remove the "channel" of pebble dash. It should come away quite easily and, the base brickwork will be a much better surface for fixing these steel uprights.

Thanks guys..I guessed that cutting a channel with a grinder and chisseling out the dash was the best option too - but I just wanted a second opinion.

No doubt I'll have a few more questions as the project continues...

Scrape the pebbledash stones with a shovel downward movement (wear goggle!) before using the angle grinder otherwise the stones will fly everywhere when cutting
