Removing room ventilation, foam or brick?

I've got a wind tunnel in my lounge for the existing gas fire (I'm replacing with a stove so don't need an airbrick)

I want to block it up but what's the best way?
The pvc tube is pretty well fixed inside the breeze block, is it better to remove it and brick over or can I fill the hole with foam and plaster over?
