Removing varnish from furniture

My dining table and chairs needs to be re varnished.
They need to be stripped to the bare wood.

What is the best recommended procedure - chemical - sandpaper.

If they are anything other than very straightforward pieces (e.g. carved, etc) then I'd consider getting a stripper to do the job for you. If they are modern pieces they are probably not varnished at all - Nitromors is nasty stuff to deal with and in any case can't shift some of the 2-pack lacquers which have been around since the sixties or seventies. A good stripping shop can get specialised strippers to handle this sort of stuff. Just watch out for different species/tones of wood as modern chairs are frequently made-up from a hotch-potch of different timbers stained to look alike. If they are varnished and the varnish is crazed then scraping may be your best bet followed by a light sanding. Be sure to wear a mask.
