Replace floorboards with plywood prior to tiling?

I've read the various emails on tiling over floorboards and see I will need a thick plywood base, but with thick tiles this will make the floor noticably higher than the adjoining room. Is replacing the boards with the plywood a way of getting the stable base without the height? Or will it not support the weight?

wouldnt have thought ply wood on its own a good idea as it will flex too much

ok, thanks
I've also read I can put a flexi-matt straight onto the original boards if they're sound and secure and tile straight onto that.
Well, I can't feel my boards move, they don't creak and it's a very small area. But how can I be sure this method will be ok (other than find out when it's too late).

No problem there but as it's a small area why not do as you say replace the floor boards with exterior plywood instead.

no mention of small area in first post, which is why i said it may flex
