We have a 3 gang switch which operates 3 lights, porch, hall and landing. We have a new light fitting for the hall which does not need a ceiling rose. We have at the light fitting 4 cables, one switch cable and 3 others, two of which we assume to be the downstairs loop and the other the upstairs as the landing light is operated from both downstairs and upstairs. We have wired in the switch neutral to the live connection on te fitting as directed, the other 3 neutrals are connected to the fittings, the 3 lives are connected together in a block as are the 3 earths. The switch earth is connected to the fitting. The fitting itself is earthed to the mounting bracket.

Problem.... when the wires are connected thus we have no hall or landing light but all other lights both upstairs and down are working. What have we done wrong.

If everything else is working correctly then you would seem to have done something wrong with the switch wire. The upstairs light which is also switched from downstairs should have either a three core cable, or an extra single cable, to make the two way switching work properly but you dont mention this. Perhaps the "extra" cable does something else?

Another thing, saftey.
By connecting the earth from the switch wire to the new light fitting earth, neither is earthed just connected together.

All the earth wires should be connected to the earth terminal of the fitting.
