my house is rendered, but around my old wooden frames the render is even thicker, so about 2 inches of frame is behind the rendering on all sides.
do i have to remove all the render from inside the window recesses to fit the upvc windows?

In a word......yes. You will find that in order to remove the existing window you will have to remove the render from the reveals. Once you have fitted the new windows you can just redo the render to recreate the original look.

Your posting implies you have 2 in of rendering in the window recess , but some that 2 in may well be brickwork.
If you have old windows you could well have a old house.
Now some old houses when they were built had the window fitted from the inside and it butted up to the inside of the outer wall, which meant the window was over the cavity. It also meant the aperture in the outside wall was smaller than the inside one by about 2 in each side, so looking from the outside you did not see all of the frame, and this is the situation you may have.
This would leave you the choice of fitting the new frame in the outside wall where 95% of the frame would be seen, or fitting the new frame (slightly larger) in the original position over the cavity where very little of the frame would be on view.
If the inside window aperture is larger than the outside and the new window is going over the cavity, then you would not need to remove any rendering, but it becomes more difficult to secure. If it's going on the outer leaf then yes you would have remove the render, unless its less than 5mm which is the clearance allowed on uvpc windows
Hope it helps!

Just a thought,if you don't want to remove the rendering, take the old window out carefully by cutting out the middle section etc then make a sort of frame inside the recess to the thickness of the rendering,so it now flush then your new pvc window should go straight in then finish off with sealant but the window will be slightly smaller.(without looking at it,might not be possible)
