Hi all,

I am looking to replace my stairs as they are creaky and 2 of the treads have split and disconnected from the riser so i think its time for a replacement.
Its a 1940/50's ex council house with a wall on either side of the flight.

It is a straight flight with 13 steps but the bottom step is wider as it follows the shape of the wall at the bottom.

Now i have tried to get some quotes but upon ringing 5 different carpenters 4 of them said no thanks over the phone at the mention of new stairs, the 5th looked but never came back to me.

So what i want to know is should i be calling builders or carpenters ? what sort price am i looking at as i have so far been unsuccessful in even getting a quote.

Im close to giving up and just living with the noise :)

cheers

You should be talking to a carpenter and for the life of me I can't understand why a competent carpenter would turn the job down flat. A straight flight isn't that difficult to install, but doing all the detailed stuff which goes with it like replacing handrails, spindles, newel posts, etc can and does take time. Good luck finding a carpenter who is experienced enough to be able to do the job

That's the thing there are no newel posts or spindles and the handrail is mounted straight to the wall.

One guy cut me off and just said sorry mate not my thing stairs but his yellow pages at has some nice pictures of some of his work :).

Is there anything I should be asking ?
