We have a wooden wedge (I think it's called a dook?) in the mortar of a sandstone wall. It's previously been used to anchor a washing line, but as you can see it looks as though the wood has rotten to the extent that the hook has come out. I tried to replace the hook slightly lower down, but that soon pulled out as well.
The wall is fairly crumbly, so ideally we'd like to just replace the dook rather than fix a new modern anchor. Can anyone offer any advice on how to do this?
I'm guessing I just need to drill/chisel out the existing one and surrounding mortar. Do I then simply put replacement mortar in the hole and hammer in a new piece of wood? That seems too simple and weak to be effective.
