Hi, I am attempting to replace a one way dimmer switch with a one way light switch. When I take off the dimmer switch it exposes three red wires and three black wires. I have figured out that one red wire and one black wire will need to go into the new one way light switch but what will I do with the existing black and red wires?

Thanks

James

When I remove the dimmer switch casing one red wire is connected into the common fitting and the other two red wires are fitted into the L1 fitting together. The three black wires are and are fitted into a small white casing seperate from the dimmer switch itself.

Leave the blacks in their own connector. Put the red on it's own to the C of the new switch. Put the other two reds in the L1 of the new switch.

Simples !

Don't forget to safely isolate.

It could be the other way round....

The two conductors may be loop in and out of the switch & the single one the switchwire.

Of those switches labelled C, L1 & L2 some use C & L1 others use C & L2 whilst yet others are Labelled L1 (Not C) & L2 & L3 in which case you use L1 and one of the others.

It all depends upon the manufacturer

Since the new switch has been described as a one way switch that is not a dimmer it will only have two connections.

So either terminal can be used, and it won't make a difference as to whether switch would work upside down.

The only thing to watch out for is to make sure the two reds that share a terminal stay together.

A 2 way switch would have three terminals. It can be used as a one way switch.
