as you have pointed out your bb heats your water from the gas supply
you immersion heats the water with electricity which means if your gas boiler breaks down you can switch on the electric immerion heat .
having to work on these backboilers nearly every day my advice is get shot of it as it is probably only about 65% efficient where the new high effieciency boilers are about 90%
so keep your hair on and keep taking the caffieene

so £3,000 to convert to a new boiler

the new boiler saves what? £300 a year with luck?

So for ten years he will be out of pocket.


Might do better to hang onto the old boiler until either he has £3,000 spare kicking about, or the old boiler has an expensive fault on it.

There's a lot to be said for waiting until summer before having a boiler changed.

And a modern conventional boiler, with a well-insulated cylinder that still has an immersion heater in it, gives some protection against the occasions when a combi breaks down.

It would do nothing but good to give your boiler a chemical clean. If you like DIY and can do simple plumbing, you could swap the pump for a new one and fit a magnetic filter yourself as well to capture the old sediment and sludge that an old system is pretty sure to contain.

What your boiler lacks in efficiency it more than makes up for in reliability,as I said before try and find a good Gas safe engineer who is comfortable working on this type of boiler and get it serviced every year.
