Hi,

Please forgive any incorrect terms - I accidentally fell in the DIY deep end when I bought a house which was apparently "well maintained" and looked like it just needed a little light decorating.

I have noticed a couple of missing tiles, and from the loft I can see sunshine through the gaps left. I'm slightly worried about the chance of rain getting in and causing damage.

I understand that the roof is "torched" - a mortar of some manner on the underside of the tiles - much of which now lies on top of the loft insulation.

The tiles in question are easy to reach from the inside of the loft - and I'd prefer not to go rambling on my roof like an extra on casualty if I can help it.

What I'm wondering is if I can solve the immediate problem by sliding a couple of tiles into position from inside the loft ( assuming I can buy a couple ) - or will this cause more damage than its worth? I'm not averse to employing a roofer - but have a few jobs to do and was hoping to leave them till after payday.

To do it properly, it needs to be done from the outside, get a roofer in, he will probably use a roof ladder to gain access.

The pointing underneath is called Torching, a lime mix with horse hair added.

I realise this is super old but I have a 1950's house with a torched roof - would that be horsehair too or was that a much older practice?
