Restaining/varnishing wooden windowsill in conservatory

Hi, I am looking to give the windowsills in the conservatory a makeover and wondered the best way to do it. I think they've previously been stained etc but have faded and have rings on them etc. Is it simply a case of sanding down and restaining with the appropriate colour and then varnishing for protection or is there more to it than that!?
