Restoring interior of wooden framed windows

I'm planning on having internal shutters mounted on the window frames of my wooden framed bay-windows. Before I do so I'd like the internal woodwork to be in as good condition as possible, since subsequent maintenance will be that much harder.

There are only a few visible problem areas - small areas of flaking paint & exposed wood, mostly close the glass - so what is the best approach? Can I strip and prime just the problem areas, then lightly sand the good surfaces in preparation for a coat of gloss all over? Am I being lazy - should I be taking everything back to bare wood?

Strip back the flaking areas till you reach good paint then feather in as you say but you will need to prime, undercoat and then gloss the bare areas.
