Facebook in its original incarnation was only open to universities (you had to use a student number or something to sign up.) A few years ago it was opened up to the general public and the uptake exploded. Oh, and these stupid apps started appearing. Back in the day it was a "face book" because it was a bunch of students uploading photos and tagging them.
