1 gang = single socket
2 gang = double socket

or do you mean poled?

'1 gang' is a bit of a loose term, normally used when describing light switches, but sometimes for sockets too. A 1 gang socket is a single socket. A 2 gang socket is a double or twin socket. (Two 13A outlets side by side).

1-pole and 2-pole is another thing. A 1-pole socket doesn't switch the neutral, which means that faulty appliances which are plugged in can trip RCDs even when switched off. 2-pole sockets also isolate the neutral when they are switched off, making them the usual choice. 2-pole sockets are slightly more expensive.

Because there is very little difference in the price of a double (2 gang) socket over a single I would normally always fit doubles except where the socket is for a special purpose i.e. Fridge, Washing Machine, etc. and/or if supplied vie 20A grid switch.
