Hi

Can some one please advise me on this, we recently got chimney removed and few days back when it was raining really bad I heard some drops of water in the loft. I went up but could not see anything as it was dark and did not have a light to hand, but next morning i saw some moisture on the wall. I asked the builder he said he has to call a roofer who suggested he will put a cap on the top and that should take care of it.

Is that right or should I ask him to do something more than that coz unfortunately the guys we got are a bit of cowboys and are just trying to finish the work as quickly as possible, he also said he will charge me for this work, should this not be part of chimney removal process that the top needs to be sealed so water cant come through.

Please if someone could advise that would be great.

Hi

Thanks for the reply
We basically mentioned what all needs to be done so it was just like chimney removal from Living and Bedrooms and then the price as it was a big refurbishment I did not get into each and every thing and was getting something of this type and scale(renovations) done for the first time and the contractor did not say anything either so now confused.
Complete idiot but ftb so will only learn with time.

I have no idea, how should it be supported coz i can go up and check over the weekend if at all he has not done it.

The rest of the stack should be supported with either gallows brackets or a lintel.

The gallows for the "builder" and a lintel for the chimney

The chimney was probably letting water in for years but it was enclosed, now there is just an opening its become obvious and depending on the condition of the stack it may be problem for a while.
