Our third bedroom is 2,5x2,5m. Original floorboards from 1930s are dirty with some spilled paint. Would it be possible to clean them by using a small handheld sander? Tried coarse sandpaper but it's an extremely slow job. Thanks for any help.

Hmmm...a good hand held orbital sander might do it, but it'd take a long time (days!!!) and the orbital might be knackered by the time it's done...or worst case scenario BEFORE you finish.

A day's hire of a floor sander would do a much better job and save you a LOT of physical labour. Might cost a touch more, but that's the proper way to go...

Couldn't agree more Trotter, I killed a hand held sander doing exactly that.

Hired a floor sander from the local hire shop and job was done in minutes. Beware of the coarse sand paper as it can be very aggressive on the wood and cause hollows. Makes a real nice dusty mess aswell. Good luck.

You can get the continuous belt sanders now, very effective. Literally hardly any dust either, believe it or not.

I second Ooops' point on how agressive the floor sanders can be. If you've never used one before just be wary about stopping on the same spot for too long (this includes turning). Keep it moving and you should be ok.
You can use the small sander for the edges and corners that the big one won't reach.
Oh, and close the doors and block the gaps with towels (or masking tape them up) as the dust gets literally everywhere. You won't stop it but you will minimise it.
