I would check the adhesive manufacturer's instructions first. Eg Bal recommend SEALING the back and edges of ply with BAL BOND SBR. Ardex recommend using polyurethane varnish for sealing the back and edges, then PRIME the tile surface with Ardex P51 primer and tile with Ardexflex 7001. Sealing the underside and edges stops moisture coming through from the edges and bottom.

Not sure how many of you would agree (or disagree) but after fixing underfloor heating mats i always get lots of the primer left over (in particular the green stuff that comes with the Warmup Mats) I dilute this 1 part primer to 4 of water and use this as a primer. Never had any problems. Anyone?

the W.B.P. i use is water boil proof.

Why seal?

Mind you, i have known an instance where the reddish colouring in the ply 'bled' through into the tile grout once.
