I'm about to become self employed and need a small van for about £600 (not a lot I know) any idea's on places I can buy or web sites to look at?I've being told auctions might be the best bet. I just need an idea of what I can get for the money.

cheers

I think you'll really struggle at £600, bearing in mind you add vat (usually) and there are auction fee's.
But British car auctions Measham hold a commercial vehicle auction once a month, usually hundreds go through, good luck

Dont see many Maestro vans about these days ;)

On a serious one, probably find a Vauxhall Combo or Escort on an M/N

Don't know if you have bought one yet but have you though about an estate you won,t pay vat and they are far more practical, insurance tends to be dearer on a van and if you are on a tight budget this might be an option.

Im in a similar position, recently self employed and need something larger than my current car (peugot 406) but dont want a van, been looking at estates and 4 x 4's (cheap ones!) but most still out of my price range for a decent one. A small van is actually quite often more expensive than a tranny sized for some reason.
Regarding VAT, another angle to look at is that you can offset 100% of a van against tax but only part of the car.

i just use my astra estate. plenty room. (its a car type, not van). for work, all my stuff fits in the boot. altho if i have a big job then i sometimes have to drop the seats

Have a look in the bargain cars section of Auto Trader and your local free adds papers. The web stuff is usually out of this price range but there are plenty of bargains to be had. Local shops and super market notice boards are also worth a try. You must have a local rag of some kind that has classifieds in it? High mileage is good value but watch running gear, bearings, ball joints, steering rack, brakes etc. Modern diesel engines if well serviced are easily capable of 200,000+ mls but the rest of the vehicle isn't routinely serviced so tends to suffer. However if you reasonably handy most jobs are doable. Good luck.

Get a citroen C15 1.8 diesel, does 300k miles+ if looked after, plus you get them quite cheap. Dont get anything with the ford 1.8 diesel, these engines are TERRIBLE, seen quite a few melt after lowish miles plus the timing belts snap for a living.
