We've got a small top window which we'd like to keep open at night a couple of inches. Can anyone suggest a security feature which would secure the window from being opened more than it is in the picture. But also have the option to disengage this security feature so it can be fully opened and shut easily when necessary.

Good suggestion and hadn't thought of that. I would use it as a last resort but ideally looking for something more secure as a small bolt croppers would make short work of that. But it is certainly better than nothing.
Bolt croppers only work on rigid metal, these contain a bundle or hardened steel wires, they would just crush down but not be severed.

However cable shears would go through those without too much trouble.
Or a hammer to break the glass.
