WE recently wired a shed coming from the consumer unit in the persons house using 3 core 6 sq swa.My question is my boss said put it on an mcb at the main consumer unit and the sub board in the shed has an rcd in it.Is it alright to supply the shed through an mcb.Cable was clipped to outside wall exposed to the elements. In case your wondering there was no power tools or heavy loads in the shed

Yes its fine. the cable needs no RCD protection, since its mechanically protected via its earthed metal sheath.

What if it wasnt swa would the shed need to be on rcd
Unsure. Probably, since its run outside the equipotential zone. However, you wouldn't go running twin and earth outside now, would you? ;)

You are only required to provide RCD protection to socket outlets likely to supply equipment for use outdoors.

It does not matter what the cable type is, WRT RCD protection the regs are the same. (And you still have to ensure the cable type is suitable for the environment it is installed in)
