Hi guys, thanks for all the help you gave me with making the storage units out veneered boards. I have got all the units made screwed together and fixed to the wall, and it is now time to fix the shelves to the support battens (20mm x 20mm). As the boards are veneered i dont want the fixings to be seen.

Is it ok to screw through the battens in to the shelves from the underside so long as i use a pilot hole?

Or will the boards split, screwing so close to the edge?

What is the best way to fix the shelves?

all the best newbie

Since gravity acts downwards (mostly) do you need to fix the shelves?

I was thinking about fixing the shelves in place so when the kids (who are already eyeing up the units) start climbing all over the shelves they wont move.
