In the shower control, it is getting more so that i have to turn the tap off tighter to stop the water flow, and was just wondering how to get at the washer, in the tap shown. Bit scared of water, so would it be wise to get a plumber, or is it easy enough? I once did a kitchen sink tap. Similar?

The water will require isolating, there could be a couple of local service valves for the shower on nearby pipe work, if not then stop tap will need to be turned off and water drained off.
On the shower valves it looks, like you have caps at the front, that can be gently prised away by the use of small flat headed screwdriver, this will then reveal the valve head screw fixing, these can be undone and the valve body can then be made accessible. If needs be you could remove the front plate if further access is required, just undo the fixing screw.

is the washer part then easily recognisable? was just speaking to a plumber who said the 'whole cartridge' may need replacing, this sounds expensive.

Do you know the make and model type of the shower, if so you can google images and part diagrams that will show the components for you, some are easily maintainable, some are not.
