Shower Drain

I installed a new shower and the drain that came with shower said no plunbers putty needed, it said to put rubber ring on top and tighten nut on bottom. I thought all rings went on bottom the shower is in on second floor and can not get to bottom can this be sealed with silicone just for precaution.
