This is an interesting topic and could explain why my SIME sometimes will not fire up (red light on) untill the control knob is turned to ignite.

Could my expansion vessel need re charging, and how could this be tested?

expansion vessel has a schrader type valve (car tyre) on the top or side

you need to isolate and drain the boiler then use a car tyre pressure guage on the valve

precharge is in the region of 1 bar

if low put a pump on and pump it up
