I had a squabble between my n/s/f alloy and a large chunk of masonry in the road.

The alloy needs replacing. Skoda dealer in M/cr has quoted 182.13 inc vat with fitting extra.

Any ideas where I can get one a little cheaper?

Skoda HO say that larger dealers may offer a bigger discount on list.

Is a 2nd hand one any good? Or will it be out of the frying pan......?

If I don't know its provenance, then I may be buying a duffer.

What say you?

You should get one easily enough from a salvage yard. They damage quite easily so a visual inspection is usually enough. If you are concerned about a used one (which may be newer than your own) I would suggest you put it on the back of your car.

I would spend a couple of quid on the Autotrader there are plenty of breakers in the NW.

So you don't think the fact that the car is an 02 a problem?

Guess there are some write-offs of newer cars...

No.

Brand new cars are involved in accidents, most are front end.The biggest problem is the Skoda version is less common than the Audi/VW. I am not sure if the wheels are the same. I don't mean the fitting, I mean the style/pattern. This should be a straight forward comparison though.

As you know the makers change wheel styles quite often, so it may help if you E mail a piccy to them.

I don't mean scrap yards as such, more later salvage yards, many are one make specialists now, which may help you.

There are definately some big, modern breakers in our local Auto-trader.

If you do a google there are also many agencies such as this.

http://www.car-breakers.info/Web_Pages/HomeFrame.htm

They search data bases, which is useful.

Also try Audi breakers on google, there are plenty, and they will post to you. Most are open on Sunday so it will give something to do!

What about the tyre? If the wheel is that badly damaged would it be prudent to use a new tyre on a new wheel (if going the Skoda parts-office route).

As has been said, alloys damage easily. If it looks perfect, it probably is. If it has been involved in a smack, you will probably be able to see.

If it has somehow been squashed in a prang and is now invisibly egg-shaped, you will feel that as soon as you drive at any amount of speed.

That's 2 tyres and a wheel (thorn and concrete)... we could give it a few more days and you will need a new motor .. you know how things happen in triplicate .. oooer !!

Pip

I thought it but did not say it - you've done it now!

If anything happens, I'll send you the bill!!!!

Boo!!!

Any Skoda Sceptics just walk into a Skoda showroom and sit in a new Octavia - you don't have to drive it, just sit in it. You'll be smiling for all the wrong reasons when you leave!
