Just bought an Escort Cabriolet on an R reg, and it seems really slow for a 1.6 engine, one known issue i have with it is the rear passenger side wheel bearings need sorting out but would that cause it to slow the car down?

I didn't buy it for speed but i think there is something there that needs sorting, an example of what i mean is that i was on the motorway yesterday i can only go above 70mph when going downhill and going up hill it just loses power.

If anyone has any ideas i'd truly appreciate it!!

thanks

Your wheel bearing would not cause your car to slow down. its r reg, what milage, full service history?
Do you know enought about cars to recognise a slipping clutch?

Does it smoke at all during tick over or on accelleration ?

Without that info, the engine sounds goosed.

The exhausts are known for collapsing on these.
Has it got a rev counter? If so, try and give it full revs while at standstill and see if it gets anywhere near the top.

the clutch doesn't slip, the engine sounds fine with no smoke and the milage is 89,500.

I've not tried seeing if the revs go to the top in standstill but will try it shortly, but in motion i haven't seen the revs pass 4000 on the counter.

Thanks for your replies!!!!
