Hi I wonder if anyone can help,
I have a "rotten egg" smell in my ensuite which I believe is coming from the internal stench pipe. The stench pipe is boxed in with a wooden cover on the top. I've removed the cover to have a bit of a nose around but the smell isn't noticeably stronger. The top of the stench pipe has a simple cap - is this right? The house is 16 years old and the smell gets much worse when the weather is cold i.e. below freezing.

Any thoughts??

The "simple cap" you mention is known as a durgo (air admittance valve) if this is broken then maybe this is the cause of the smell, So buy a new one from your local plumbing merchant, If the smell exists then it could be one of the traps on you sink or bath as seco services suggested.

Very many thanks for prompt replies - really appreciated.

Yes traps all have water in them. I will check the durgo.
