I have a double socket in the kitchen that i use for power tools in the garden. I want to change it to an RCD socket but notice that it is a spur and is connected straight to the lighting circuit and not the ring main.

Is this a problem?

yes.

you should never run a socket off the lighting cct

lighting cct runs at 5 / 6 amps

sockets supply up to 13 a

Thanks for the quick reply breezer.

What effect would this have on the circuit?

too much corrent drawn would trip the mcb

its not rcd protected

dangerous

not necesarily.

remove cable that is feeding it, and feed it corectly, that way you still keep the socket whole in which it is mounted (assuming its flush)

OK. My only problem is that the nearest socket to spur from is approx 15ft away at the far end of the kitchen. Is there a way of doing this without having to chase away the walls and ripping tiles off? Can it be surface fixed or put in conduit, bearing in mind it is the kitchen and therefore i think in what they call a special location?
