At the end of least year we had a garage built. But checking it today I found in lots if places the mortar is still soft and crumbly. I think either the mortar mix was to weak or the frost may have got into the brick work when it was being built.

Can the mortar be raked out with a grinder and just re pointed or will the problem areas need to be taken down and re built. Cheers Jon

It depends on the extent of it, is it soft on the inside of the garage? and is it in little patches or all over? see how far you can rake it out with a screwdriver to see how deep it is. if its not too bad rake it and point it.

If it needs a grinder to rake it out why bother with it?

Yes, remember the purpose of mortar is not to stick the bricks together, but to hold them apart.. :)
That said, if it's so soft the rain washes it out it'll need looking at. As it's a new build, is it covered under any warranty?
