I'm installing oak solid wood flooring in a garage conversion and intend to lay the floor as a floating floor. Underneath the floor is underfloor heating ( carbon mat - www.floorheatingsystems.co.uk ) but i'm have conflicting advice on the type of glue to use, some say a normal water based PVA yet somebody else has recommended as specialist glue called T50 ?

What is the general opinions from DIYnot.com punters ?

If your laying a floating floor, you wouldn't use any adhesive. That's why it's called floating.

You'd probably need to lay an underlay. (sorry I don't know which one) You leave a gap around the edges (to allow for expansion) and then cover the gap by either fitting the skirting board on top or pinning/glueing (or both) a seperate piece of moulding to the front of the skirting.

I would doubt that glueing alone straight onto the concrete would be sucessfull (due to the underfloor heating exacerbating the expansion problem). But then, I've never heard of T50 glue. Perhaps it's been designed for this very situation.

Yes, I appreciate the expansion gap and underlay. I have done this before !!!!

The floor needs to be glued in th tongue as mentioned but what type of glue ? it is not being glued to the subfloor cos of the underfloor heating.

er, your post is a bit misleading......

You can use any PVA wood glue for this, better still get a high strength type and also read the manufacter temperature rating as it going on top of your underfloor heating.

Not in your original post!

I got the impression you were using the word "floating" in much the same way as my mother talks of electric gas cookers, or some builders rave about Stanley thermos flasks.

My post was intend to dissuade you from attempting to glue the flooring directly to the existing floor.

Sorry for any missunderstanding.

No problems Texmex. My first post was a little vague. I'll put it down to being new to this website !!!

Never thought about the temp issues with the glue. I'll have a nose about for some high strength stuff.

Can anybody recommend a specfic glue ?

Any normal (PVA) wood glue would do. Your floor will get less stress than a normal joint on, say, a chair.

But it won't be easy, since the glue tends to stop the boards fitting tightly together and you will need to clamp them.

To be honest, I would recommend you fix 2" battens to the floor and nail the boards to that.

Carbon fibre mat can either be installed between the battens (it's usually in 2' wide rolls) and you can nail through it anyway without causing electrical problems.

To aleviate the problem of the glue stopping the edges going together. Dont put any glue in the grooves, instead run a bead along the top and bottom faces of the tongue only.
