Sound proofing a party wall

Hi all

I'm part way through a party wall sound proofing project. We seem to have very thin adjoining walls & can hear the neighbour's TV whenever it's on! I'm due to finish the stud work tomorrow (adding noggins) so then i'm ready to fill the stud work with acoustic insulation.

My question is, which insulation should I get!? My local supplier options are Wickes or Travis Perkins. I am after the insulation that offers maximum sound deadening.

Can anyone help to as to which is best for sound proofing!?

The link you provided to Wickes was for thermal loft insulation - this will do nothing for acoustics!

You need one of these two:

or

One risk with the second link (heavy density stuff) is that it's more difficult to compress, so you need to cut it very accurately (use a saw whilst it's still in the outer packing) to size, whereas with the first link, you can cut 1cm oversize and then just squeeze in around the edges for a tight fit.


What plasterboard are you going to use over this?

I am no expert, but in my limited experience, I've founded that adding thickness of plasterboard helps a lot - therefore I'd go with 2 layers to get around 25mm total. If you're going to get this lot delivered by Wickes, you could use this:

Thanks so much for the reply - could have spent a lot of money on the wrong stuff there! The product i linked to (http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/161279) does say "increased acoustic performance" but i guess that it's just not good enough for party wall sound deadening?

I think i'll go for 100mm of http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/161197 as the other product you mentioned is very thin (30mm) so i'll need loads which will cost a bit too much.

you can also get acoustic plaster board a heavier denser board. travis perkins should stock that
