I have a unit in an old (former) cotton mill - I had an office space made using stud walls and a lowered ceiling.

Recently a business moved in to the unit upstairs and they run industrial sewing machines throughout the day - the noise is driving me crazy! I've been looking at options for adding some sound proofing. I was thinking of taking down the plasterboard and replacing the noggins with resilient bars - possibly even replacing the plasterboard with soundboard.

Is this likely to be effective in reducing the noise?
thanks

Terry

Sorry but I don't think it will have a noticeable effect. It would be much more effective to get the sewing-machines mounted on suitable flexible-mounts to prevent the noise being transmitted into the floor.

Obviously you need to look at your lease/ talk to your landlord.
