Spotlights in UPVC ceilings

No it isnt. 50 watt spotlights get very very hot.

However, there are energy saving versions available that run cooler, and LED versions that run stone cold.

Difficult to say without knowing exactly what your ceiling is. As stated before CFL like these run cooler but the front lens still gets prtetty hot - too hot to touch for long - and may spread this heat to the fitting. LED's run cold - no problem - but arent very good yet - but getting better - try again in ten years.

Thanks for the advice...

Would something like this be suitable?

I note you went for the cheapo fitting  I have the white ones of these, but they are very flimsy, and dont quite fit right in the old downlight holes, slightly smaller!

Do you have a sample of PVC to do a little test on?

It certainly wont catch fire, but over time it may discolour and/or warp.

As the 50w lights get so hot, do the 35w bulbs give off much less heat and therefore be more suitable?

15 watts less heat,

35 watts in a small space can produce a temperature high enough to affect plastic. Worse is to melt it, next is to make it brittle ( evaporating the plasticisors from the plastic ) so it falls apar at the least touch and the least is often discolouring.
