stained woodwork to another colour stain

hello i have stained woodwork but i want to go to another colour stain is it a no no would i have to strip the old colour stain back to natural wood to put the other colour stain in , or does stain cover well?

Depends on the colours your talking about..

I do know if people who think that if you put a pine stain over mahogany it will turn the wood into pine...it wont..

Darker over lighter will work...but the colour below will influence the new colour going over it

But not the other way around
 
thank you zampa if i did want to go lighter is there a way of doing this like geting the old stain off?

Friad not mate other than paintint the wood with a creamy colour undercoat and brushing the stain roughly over it to create a grain effect..it wont look as good as real wood though..depends how fussy you are really and what your after achieving
