Stencil Removal

Hello All

Having recently moved into a new house the previous occupants left stencils on the wall.

We have tried painting over them but they still show through the new paint.

Does anyone have any hints or tips or how we can "seal" them so that they do not show through any new paint that we apply.

Thank you for your reply Texmex - the website has only just informed me today that you replied!

In the meantime, we have found a paint that does the job that B&Q sells so I would like to thank you for your advice anyway as I'm sure that would've been our next option!
