Stone for Splitting

Where is the best place to purchase stone for splitting. Builder Merchants or Garden Centre?
I wish to buy some for use in the garden. I did have quite a bit given to me some time ago, which was very easy to split into approx. 20mm thickness, even for a novice. But can't find where it came from.
