stone shower tray bedding

I'm now just about to fit my new shower tray (acrylic covered stone) and I understand that it should be bedded on a weak mortar mix. However my neighbour has suggested I should use a self levelling compound instead.
Is this a good idea?
Has anyone tried this - and did it go OK?

Mortar is what's usually stated in the instructions. Unless yours says otherwise.

Go with the instructions, self leveling is too thin.

I silicon makes it nice and solid when set

Mortar mix.
Doing it this way will make it easier for you to get the tray level.
Follow the instructions.

Agreed on the mortar mix, 5:1 is about right, mix it wetter than you think you need if it's going onto wooden boards / chipboard or the wood will draw the moisture out too fast. I put a bit of mortar plasticiser in as well, apparently fairy liquid does the same job although I've never tried it, but I've heard it works.

Not recommended for lots of resin bonded shower trays. Mira Flight is one I can think of that recommend silicone for bedding their trays with.
